Neck injuries can be extremely serious and have long-lasting effects and result from trauma to neck muscles and upper spine structures. Common types include whiplash, herniated cervical disks, and cervical spondylosis.

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck and is the most common and can be very dangerous. It can lead to chronic neck pain. Symptoms include stiffness, headaches, dizziness, and memory loss. Herniated cervical discs, also known as “slipped discs,” occur when sudden movement pushes a spinal disc between vertebrae. This can result in nerve damage and chronic pain. Cervical spondylosis, or “neck arthritis,” can cause severe pain for accident victims. While usually age-related, vehicle accidents can accelerate joint and disc degeneration in the cervical spine.

Neck injuries can occur in various scenarios, from automobile accidents to falls, potentially causing herniated discs, muscle strains, and soft tissue damage. The full extent of a neck injury may not be immediate, often becoming known well after the accident. Some serious neck injuries, like whiplash or nerve damage, may have delayed onset symptoms.
