What you should know about herniated discs
You came out of the accident thinking, "Whew, I was saved!" No fractures, no visible injuries. Maybe just a little sore. You took it as simple whiplash or the stress of the moment and tried to get on with your life. But a few days later, the pain started. Maybe it was an intense twinge down your leg, or a stiffness in your neck that wouldn't go away. Suddenly, things like sitting at your desk, walking the dog or getting a good night's sleep become difficult.
You could be dealing with a herniated disc, one of the most painful and yet most overlooked injuries after an accident, whether it's a car, bicycle or some other traumatic event. At Protection in ActionOur attorneys handle these types of cases all the time and understand how this injury can affect you in a silent but powerful way. Our goal is to help you heal not only physically, but also legally, emotionally and financially.
What Happens When You Have a Herniated Disc?
Imagine your spine as a tower of bones separated by soft discs, like little gel cushions that cushion your movements. These discs allow your body to bend, twist and stretch. When an accident suddenly jolts your body, the gel inside the disc can leak out and press on nearby nerves, causing inflammation. This is known as a herniated disc.
Some people feel the pain right away, but others don't notice anything until the swelling grows, sometimes hours or even days later. That's why it's so important not to ignore symptoms after an accident, even if they seem mild at first.
Symptoms Not to Ignore
Herniated discs usually occur in two areas: the neck (cervical spine) and the lower back (lumbar spine). If the injury is in the neck, you may feel pain going down your shoulders, arms or even your fingers. You may notice that you lose strength in your hands or that they become numb or tingly.
If the injury is in your lower back, you may have what is known as sciatica: a burning pain down one leg, sometimes accompanied by tingling in the foot or difficulty climbing stairs. Regardless of where the injury is, if moving around becomes painful or difficult, you need medical attention.
Diagnosis and Treatment: What's Next?
The diagnostic process usually begins with a physical exam where the doctor checks your reflexes, strength and flexibility. If he/she notices anything unusual, he/she may order tests such as an MRI or CT scan. You may also have nerve tests such as an EMG to see which nerves are being affected.
Treatment almost always begins with noninvasive options: rest, medications to reduce inflammation, physical therapy or chiropractic care. Many people improve with these methods, but if that's not enough, doctors may recommend steroid injections or nerve blocks. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or remove the damaged disc.
At Protection in Action not only do we help you access these treatments, we can also cover the costs if you need it. You shouldn't delay your recovery just because you're worried about money.
Legal Support to Go Hand in Hand with Your Recovery
If your herniated disc was caused by someone else's negligence-such as speeding, distracted driving or disregarding the rules of the road-you are entitled to compensation. That compensation may cover your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income, loss of future ability to work and any ongoing treatment or therapy.
We work on contingency, which means you pay nothing unless we win your case. We take care of everything: gathering medical documentation, dealing with insurance companies, and handling the entire legal process, so you can concentrate on getting back on your feet.
